John Callen

Voice Artist / Actor / Director / Writer

John has worked for more than 45 years as a professional actor, director and writer in theatre, radio, film and television. He has been awarded best actor and best supporting actor. Performing or directing more than 100 stage productions and two dozen television series and has appeared in a number of films including all three of The Hobbit movies. He recently starred as Leonato in Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing at Auckland’s Pop-Up Globe and last year wrapped shooting on a New Zealand/Denmark co-production for TV playing an Italian-bar owner in an exciting crime drama. John has narrated more than 150 documentaries internationally as well as audio books and many commercials. His directing credits include Shortland Street, The Tribe, Taonga and the story of World War II hero Sir Keith Park, The Kiwi Who Saved Britain. John is also a founding board member of The Actors’ Program and an Equity member and teaches at The Actors’ Program and has also taught at Toi Whakaari and Unitec. He is very enthusiastic about working with young people and is in constant demand for voice work of all kinds.

Katherine Kennard

Actor / Voice Artist / Accent & Dialect Coach

British born Katherine is an award winning actress who has been in the Film, Television, and Theatre industry for over 20 years. She is the owner of ‘Accent Solutions’ offering Standard English accent coaching to English Second Language speakers. She also works with actors helping them with auditions and was dialect coach on the recent ‘Roman Empire’. As a voice over artist she has been working successfully in the International market and has recently been nominated for the One Voice awards.

Natalie Beran has a radio career spanning over 15 years and has worked as a radio announcer/producer, voice over artist for film and TV and actress in New Zealand, Mexico, Canada and the USA.

She has a vast range of experience in radio and television commercial voiceovers, corporate & IVR reads, narration, radio drama, audiobooks, e-learning, gaming and cartoon animation voices. She holds a Bachelor of Communication Studies (Radio) from AUT and is also a graduate of the American Musical and Dramatic Academy (AMDA New York) and is a SOVAS Voice Arts nominee.

Toby delivers voice over in British, New Zealand, Australian and Standard American, plus hybrid accents, which combine different elements of each. Based in rural Northland, working from a small self-built cedar cabin studio in the forest, Toby is an expert in sound with training and a history in sound engineering and audio post-production. He’s been nominated for 2 x SOVAS awards, and was winner of ‘Male Voice Artist of the Year’ at the One Voice Awards 2018 & three other awards, and is nominated again in six categories for 2019. International Accent Workout

Saturday 13th April 9am – 4:30pm

An accent technique and refresher workout covering American, British, Australian, NZ and other international accents with voice actors Alexandra Whitham, Jacque Drew, Katherine Kennard and Natalie Beran.

The International Accent Workout is a one-day practical workout covering multiple accents and voice work.

Working in small groups with all the voice tutors, you’ll spend the day moving between accents and tweaking dialects for character development.

Your workout will involve specific accent differences, pronunciations, phonetics, melody and speech patterns, sound changes, tempo/stress/rhythms, grammar and attitudes.

Alexandra Whitham

Australian Accent

Alexandra is the Lecturer in Voice in the Performing & Screen Arts Department at Unitec in Auckland. She teaches BA Acting students in Voice, Dialects, Speech and Text, and leads a module in Australian Dialects for The Actors’ Program. Alexandra also works as a Theatre Director, and Voice & Dialect Coach for theatre, TV, and film within the wider industry. Her recent credits as an Aussie Dialect Coach include ‘Cloud Street’ directed by John Davies (Unitec Theatre), â€˜Blackrock’ directed by herself (Unitec Theatre), ‘Gwen in Purgatory’ directed by Katherine McRae (TAPAC), and â€˜April 25’ directed by Leanne Pooley (General Film Corporation). 

Alexandra grew up in South Australia, and studied acting for three years at AIT Arts. After completing a BA from Flinders University, Alexandra trained and worked as an actor, theatre director and voice coach in the United States and UK. She received her Masters in Voice Studies from the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama in London in 2009, and became a Designated Linklater Voice Teacher in 2010. In the UK, Alexandra taught at a number of drama schools, including East 15, the Oxford School of Drama, the Royal Central School of Speech & Drama, and the Academy of Live & Recorded Arts. She has lived in New Zealand for seven years.

Jacque Drew

American Accent

Jacque is a voice and dialect coach specialising in American accents. Her unique approach, integrating accent and acting to create authentic character, makes her one of New Zealand’s most sought after coaches. Her approach includes physical practice, tuning in the ear and exploring the cultural context of the character. Jacque is also a professional actor and voice artist with over 30 years of industry experience. 

Jacque teaches standard American accent and American professional practice at Unitec School of Performing and Screen Arts, The Actor’s Program and South Seas School of Film and Television. She also runs regular workshops for professional actors, and provides private coaching. In addition, she works as a dialect coach for theatre (SiLo Theatre, Auckland Theatre Company, Brilliant Adventures, Peach Productions) and Screen (Pete’s Dragon, Crouching Tiger; Hidden Dragon 2, Emperor, The Warriors Way, The Making of the Mob 2, American Playboy: The Hugh Hefner Story).
